Sassoon, David Solomon
   1) (1792-1864)
   Indian businessman and philantropist. He took over his family businesss in Baghdad. In 1828 he went to Bushehr on the Persian Gulf, and later settled in Bombay. There he built a synagogue, contributed to various cultural and welfare organizations, helped to publish a Judeo-Arabic newspaper, and supported Jewish scholarship. In 1863 he built a synagogue in Poona, where he had his summer residence.
   2) (1880-1942)
   English Hebraist and bibliophile, son of Flora Sassoon. His collection included 1000 Hebrew and Samaritan manuscripts. His writings include History of the Jews of Baghdad.
